M.O.P Cares – NSS

NSS – National Service Scheme (YRC & RRC)

The NSS cell of the college has 3 units with 300 volunteers. It aims to instil the idea of social welfare in students, and provide service to the society without bias. NSS volunteers of the college work to ensure that anyone who is in need gets assistance to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity.

The NSS student volunteers of the college actively take part in community engagement activities and collaborate with NGO’s to deliver service to the needy.

Objectives of the NSS:

To develop the personality of students through community service.

To enable students to understand the community in which they work.

To inculcate the spirit of volunteerism in students.

To render to the grievances of the community.

To expose students to the hidden social problems and enable them to address the issues.

Activities:

Special Camps are organised for 7 days in rural villages where volunteers interact with the villagers, understand their social issues and create awareness through workshops and cultural programmes. Apart from these, various initiatives are undertaken throughout the year.

NSS activities for the year 21-22

Special Camp on Munnetra Padayil

The N.S.S cell of M.O.P.Vaishnav college conducted a 7 day special camp in Thiruverkadu on the topic “Munnetra padayil” (towards the path of development) and created awareness on the various schemes of government through their volunteers. Various programmes like temple cleaning, e-waste management, awareness campaigns on waste segregation, e-vidya channels, physical and mental well-being, dental camp, street plays, rallys, imparting reading, writing and numerical skills to the less privileged students of the campsite were conducted for the benefit of the society. Expert lectures were organized as a part of personality development programme for the volunteers.

Outstanding achievements
Nivedita Sri L, 2013721086028 from II B.Sc. Psychology attended the Seven day National Integration Camp held at Kolkata from 25 May 2022 to 31 May 2022 at Raja NL Khan Women’s college , Autonomous, Midnapur.

Other Programmes: Life-skill workshop, Tree care activity with thuvakkam NGO, Swasth Bharath, Breast cancer awareness walkathon, Wall painting, & HIV &AIDS awareness.

Special Camp on Gram Vikas
A 7-day residential camp, GRAM VIKAS was held at Gudalur Village, Chengalpattu district . NSS volunteers were encouraged to upgrade and develop their personality through community service. The volunteers were engaged in a variety of activities that would upskill the residents of the village. training sessions on tailoring , cookery, silk thread jewellery….etc, guest lectures, field visits, swacch bharat campaign, self defence training, waste management activities, No plastic awareness, Plantation were organized for the residents of the village. Both the volunteers and the community was benefitted through the camp.
Sewing machines were donated as a small initiative to develop entrepreneurial skills among the residents.
Blue & green trash bins were donated as a part of waste segregation awareness to all the 6 wards of the village.
Value-based books were gifted to all the women participants of skill classes, which would help them to become a better version of themselves.

Outstanding Achievements

  • Krithika J (Reg No: 2113721086025) from II B.Sc. Psychology represented our college and attended 26th National Youth Festival Camp held at Hubbali-Dharwad, Karnataka from 12.01.2023 to 16.01.2023. The youth summit was based on the theme ‘Future of Work, Industry, Innovation and 21st Century skills’; ‘Climate change and disaster risk reduction’; ‘Peace building and reconciliation’; ‘Shared future-youth in democracy and governance’ and ‘ Health and Well-being’ in which youth get an opportunity to interact with chosen eminent personalities and experts having different areas of specialization.
  • Afrin Gani (2113711031002) of II B.A. Sociology, won the cash award of Rs. 3000/- for securing first place in Poster making competition conducted by Dot, school of Design in collaboration with University of Madras on account of International Women’s Day. She was felicitated by Ms. Kanimozhi, member of the Parliament and Mr. Charlie, Actor.

Special Camp

A 7-day residential special camp was conducted at Kovilambakkam village. The NSS camp aimed at improving the personality of the volunteers through community services. Under the guidance of the NSS program officers, volunteers actively engaged in temple cleaning, campsite cleaning, yoga classes and Silambam classes were organized under the Fit India scheme. As a small initiative, Start-up India Scheme NSS organized workshops to impart skills like embroidery, mehndi, jewellery making and bouquet making. A medical camp was organized by the NSS volunteers under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme and many of the residents of Kovilambakkam were benefited out it. Math classes, communication skills, and creative skills like art, origami and painting were also taught to the school children. Human chain on Drug Abuse, Awareness on Government pension scheme and voter rights were organized informative sessions. The NSS volunteers actively participated in plantation drives at Kovilambakkam village by planting saplings. At the valedictory ceremony, the NSS coordinator from the University of Madras appreciated the volunteers and donated the home utility things to all the beneficiaries at the campsite.

Outstanding Achievements :

1. R. Lavanya of I- M.A. Public Policy, R. Punitha of III- B.A. Sociology and C.M Abinaya of II – B.A. Journalism participated in the Marathon hosted by the District Level Red Ribbon Marathon, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society to raise awareness regarding HIV – AIDS and bagged three prizes for our college.

2. Diya. A. Khimsuriya, Shruthi. R, Simran. S and S. Priyadarshini of III- B.A. Economics bagged the 3rd Prize at the District Level Reels Making Competition organized by the Chennai District as part of the Youth Festival 2023 – 2024.

3. Lokavya V N- II B.Sc. VISCOM and Vaishu Gomthy A- II B.Sc. VISCOM bagged the 3rd Prize in Short Filmmaking organized by the State Youth Festival on 24th August 2023
