Muslim Man's Serenade at Tower Bridge, London goes viral

A video circulating on social media shows a Muslim man singing a call to prayer from London’s Tower Bridge. It was the first time ever the Adhan is called out on the world renowned & historic Tower Bridge in London in May, 2021. The footage was recorded during Ramadan, a holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims worldwide but some social media users falsely claimed that the event was organized by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to celebrate his re-election. The highlight of the event was the recitation and broadcast of the Adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, at sunset from Tower Bridge.

Fact: The video is not linked at all to Sadiq Khan’s re-election as mayor of London in May 2024; rather, it shows a muezzin delivering the Islamic call to prayer on the final Friday of Ramadan. Furthermore, the video was circulated in 2023 making false claims. While it is true that Sadiq Khan is Muslim, the event on Tower Bridge had nothing to do with his mayoral election. In fact, the event was held on 7th May, 2021 to call Muslims to evening prayer on the final Friday of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The false claim about Sadiq Khan’s involvement may have been spread to inflame tensions or perpetuate Islamophobic stereotypes.
