Today, the discourse on diversity in the boardroom is gathering momentum and laws are being put in place to make sure women are suitably represented at the top levels of management. MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai, boasts of offering the MBA programme exclusively for women since 1997. Our classes are all women and therefore, women’s empowerment is something unique that we offer.
The electives are offered across Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Hospitality streams. “What is unique about MOP’s MBA is that we’ve always had elective subjects handled by industry practitioners”. The electives are taught by seasoned industry experts. The college also offers Management education programs, and Industry lecture series to complement the classroom learning. The best practices and the entrepreneurial instincts are triggered through informal talks like “Breakfast with CEO” and “Rendezvous with writers” to facilitate live interaction with luminaries from the world of academics and corporate. With an experience of nearly 25 years in teaching, Dr.Jayashree is an expert at stochastic modelling and optimisation techniques. She is the Dean of Academics and heads the Mathematics department. She has published a number of research papers in reputed international journals and is a member of the academic council of She is also a member of the Board of studies at DG Vaishnav college. V Rajesh is a well known and widely acknowledged Retail and Shopper Behaviour expert who has been an integral part of the transformation of Indian Retail. An alumni of IIM Bangalore-having done executive development program, she held senior position for over 26 years in a leading PSU under Ministry of Railways till 2005. The college has a well equipped library containing vast material including a collection of online resources and EBSCO. The college is also a member of N-LIST consortium of INFLIBNET through which access is provided to E-book resources. A brief session was held on how to use the online resources as well as the importance of using these online resources while conducting research.
Conference Halls and Seminar Rooms
Conference Halls and Seminar Halls are utilized to conduct meetings, programmes and functions such as Staff Council Meetings, Meeting of Board of Studies, Management Committee Meetings, National and State Level Seminars, Industry Institutional, Interface Collaborative seminars and conferences with other organizations/Institutions and Activities of all Departments and Cultural activities of the students.
Digital resource centre with 30 terminals loaded with latest software, internet facility and statistical packages provides for the benefit for the students. The centre also facilitates anon credit course in computer applications. Continuous Internet connectivity functions for 11 hours a day for 275 days and is optimally used by both Staff and Students as a centre for knowledge management.
The college is well equipped with a state-of-art language laboratory that has licensed hardware and software. Language lab is a very useful tool that facilitates classroom engagement and interaction via computer-based exercises and activities to maximise language immersion. The lab provides practice in acquiring the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The department has established to provide students an independent forum for grievance redressal through Anti Ragging committees, Grievance councils.The department also engages with institutions and provides workshop on “Prevention of sexual harassment at workplace” and familiarizes students with the legal provisions that are available.
BUSTLE 2018 is the annual flagship event of the MBA department. BUSTLE is in its 12th edition and the last 11 years have seen the event being transformed into one of Chennai’s premier business quizzing destinations. This year the quiz was conducted on October 14th 2018 at MMA Management Center, Chennai. Eminent quiz master, Mr. Gopal Kidao was the quiz master and saw participation of 30 teams from Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum and Mumbai. The winners and participants walked away with prizes worth more than Rs. 1,20,000.
ZEST 2019 is an inter collegiate management meet conducted by the MBA department and was held on 5th March, 2019 at the college premises. ZEST 2019 was an exercise in event management for the MBA students. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 120 students from more than 20 colleges across the city. Zest 2019 was based on the theme “Oscars” and was well appreciated by all the participants of the seven events. The prizes for the individual events and the overall trophy were given by Dr. C Sylendra Babu I.P.S.
Management Development Program on “Decision making” was organised by the MBA department for the middle level managers from the corporate world. The program focussed on various facets of decision making like emotions, Business process re engineering and Decision making for entrepreneurs. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Sundaram Mani, Executive Director, Super Auto Forge. As part of the event, management games were conducted to understand the nuances of team decision making.
Union Budget Panel Discussion
Union budget discussion was conducted on 12 February 2019, at M.O.P Vaishnav College. The event was chaired by Mr. Arun Kumar Davay, economist and consultant, Mr. CA Sathyakumar, Founder, Swami Vivekanandha School of Public policy and Mr. Vignesh Krishnaswamy, Tax Consultant.
Management Lecture Series:
A lecture was conducted on “Formulating strategy in a complex environment” by Professor Suresh Gopalan, Winston Salem State university. His lecture touched upon the strategic transition happening across diverse industries like Tourism, Hospitals etc.
A talk on “Regression and Time series analysis”, by Dr. Nalini Ravishanker, Professor of Statistics, University of Conneticut, USA enlightened the students on these statistical tools and their application in research.
Breakfast with CEO:
Breakfast with CEO was envisaged by Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan, Principal of M.O.P.Vaishnav College for Women, as an opportunity for the students of the MBA Department to interact with the top management from the business world.
It is conducted as an informal event with a select group of MBA students to facilitate in depth discussion. The students interacted with Mr. Vijay Sekar, Creative Director and founder, Gobrand 360 on the emerging techniques in the digital marketing world. Ms. Bharathi Baskar’s session on “Keeping passion alive” brought out the work-life balance aspects in a woman’s life. The next session highlighted on the entrepreneurial journey of Ms. Surekha Raj, Managing Director, Skylark HR solutions.
Industrial visits are arranged to connect the theoretical concepts of production and materials management to the practical reality. Students are given a walk through the production facility, and end the session with in-depth discussions about best practices with the representatives from the organization.
Rendezvous with (w) Riters
Rendezvous with (w)Riters is an opportunity to interact with the authors
of contemporary management books. These book review sessions end with in-depth Question and Answer session for the students to clarify any of the doubts that they have after reading the book. “Power of emotions” by Mr. Ganesh kumar, Emotional Intelligence trainer and coach and “How to Invest right and prosper” by Mr. A K Narayan were reviewed and provided the students with an opportunity to understand not only the concepts in the book but also the effort that goes into creating a book.
A certification course on statistical fundamentals of research and the usage of SPSS and R as a tool for research was conducted by Dr. Dinesh Babu of Brainswig Edutech Private Ltd on the 23rd and 24th of July 2018. Mr. Kalidasan, a seasoned HR professional conducted a one-day workshop on contemporary HR practices for the students of MBA in December. A one day workshop highlighting “Investment and Risk management practices” was conducted by Mr. Srivatsan, a Chartered and cost accountant.
